Riley’s distant stare was matched only by Adam’s frantic movements. The twitch in his fingers was spastic, and his entire arm sporadically shook every few seconds. The dim light of the crew’s quarters accentuated the darkness beneath his brow, and he seemed lost in his own shadow as they all looked at the eyeless Justin lying in his bunk. Still and on his back, his face wrapped in gauze with two crimson spots bleeding through where his eyes had been. Every part of him was still except his lips. They parted ever so briefly, muttering a hoarse whisper. Quick. Uncontrolled.

“And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new…’”

“What is he saying?” asked Riley.

Whitt shook his head. “No idea.”

Adam’s flat palm slapped the wall involuntarily. He was on the very edge. The eyes of an animal had become his stare. “Isn’t right. Isn’t right. Isn’t right. Isn’t right.”

Riley’s eyes moved from Justin to Adam and back again, realization sparking within him of just how far gone his shipmate was. “The hell are we going to do?”

Whitt watched Justin’s lips move, barely parted. The slightest expulsion of mist into the cold cabin giving away the truth of breath against the facade of death. “Nothing we can do.”

“What have we done? What have we started?” asked Adam, his voice rising at an increasing pace. The words coming out fast, his eyes blinking faster than they should. “This is it, isn’t it? This is it…”

Riley turned quickly and grabbed Adam’s shirt around the collar and shoved him against the doorframe.

“Would you shut up! Goddammit, just shut the fuck up!”

Whitt reached for Riley’s shoulder but was slapped away. “No, I’ve had it with him!”

“This is it for all of us. This is the end.”

Riley reared back and balled his fist. Veins bulged from his forearm as blood coursed through them in panic. Adam’s eyes widened at the sight and then closed as Riley started his fist forward.

But there was a brief hesitation there and when the fist was finally released, it missed Adam’s face and slammed into the doorframe with a crack. Riley let go of Adam’s collar and turned his attention to his crushed hand as blood dripped from his shattered knuckles to the floor below, yet he seemed to have no reaction at all. Just a blank stare, a numbness to what had to be excruciating pain.

Adam had slunk to the floor, nearly in a whimper. Normally, the pose might make him seem weak, pathetic. But Whitt felt only empathy. So did Riley, even though he’d never admit it. Whitt saw him pull the punch, redirect it into the steel wall. Risking a broken hand instead of breaking his crewmate’s face.

He turned his gaze to Justin again. He was still speaking in that horrible whisper.

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more…”

“Christ, what the hell is he saying?” asked Riley, his attention again taken away from his hand.
